This recording of Joseph Haydn’s The Seasons has been made possible thanks to our European YOCPA (Youth Orchestra and Choir Professional Academies) project, a programme devoted to encouraging the active and creative participation of young musicians in highly demanding artistic projects. Its philosophy, which is rooted in intergenerational transmission, collective practice and the pursuit of excellence, is fully resonant with the values that for decades Hespèrion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations have stood for.

In the framework of this project we organised two academies, each one lasting six days. The first, in Cantabria, served as our starting point: days of intense preparatory work, learning and the building of a common language in relation to the piece. The objective of the second academy, which was held in Cardona and also lasted six days, was to perfect the performance and the recording of the work. The collegiate church of Cardona, with its awe-inspiring beauty and its rich, warm acoustics, provided the ideal setting, not only from the technical point of view of sound, but also on the emotional level because of its stimulus to experience a highly contrasted performance, ranging from the most subtle and delicate sounds of the work’s inspiring melodies, some of which clearly have their origin in folk music, to its descriptive evocations of the sounds of animals and impressive descriptions of natural phenomena, as in the Summer storm. According to the musicologist and eminent Haydn specialist H. C. Robbins Landon, if Haydn was unsure about the descriptive passages in The Seasons, it was partly because he suspected that the critics, who had already derided them in The Creation, would not fail to attack them again. Landon admitted this was a possibility, although he stressed that for the 21st century audience they posed as few problems as they had done in the earlier oratorio, as in both cases the most important thing was the music.
